Community Meals
Nyland asks community members to be part of a community meal every three months, by either cooking or cleaning on a meal crew, consisting of at least 2 cooks and 2 cleaners. The idea is to keep the structure open (so you'll feel inspired to participate!), in terms of day of the week, menu, number of diners, and price. Cooks can determine all of the above. That said, Sundays are commonly the day we eat together. Not all dietary restrictions need to be accommodated with each meal, although we do like to provide a vegetarian option when possible. Payment is taken at the meal, so cooks shop beforehand and are reimbursed by the money collected at the meal. Meals are usually $5 for adults and $3 for children twelve years and younger (4 and younger are free). If your menu is more expensive, you may charge more. The meal and sign up should be posted by the cooks (on the mealboard in the commonhouse) at least a week in advance, whenever possible. Cooks can be contacted directly if you want to sign up within 24 hours of the meal and sign-up has closed. Guests are welcome to join us for a meal. We ask guests to contact the cooks at least 48 hours prior to the meal, and help out for about 30 minutes with either cooking or clean up. This is a good way to get to know Nylanders, too! If you would like to be a guest at a meal, please send an email to Contact Us.
Nyland also has many other gatherings ranging from potlucks to BBQs to house concerts to holiday brunches.
