Community Meal Agreement (2008)
FIRST POINT:
A separate Community Meal Committee of approximately 4 people will be formed to facilitate community meals. Members of this committee will fulfill their CAG obligation by serving to oversee the meal system, i.e.
• Orienting community members to the meal structure and kitchen, as needed
• Sending out reminders, announcements
• Overseeing kitchen conditions (liasing with Commonhouse CAG)
• Meal Payment
• Providing an online version of the meal plan and scheduled meals that syncs up with the hard copy one in the Commonhouse
SECOND POINT:
Each community member is asked to participate in the creation of a meal gathering 4 times a year, in a variety of ways. At the beginning of each 3 month cycle, you’ll be asked to post what you plan to do and when. Posted on the Commonhouse Mealboard, will be
1) A comprehensive calendar for meals
2) A list of all community members, where they can post the meal gatherings they plan
3) Sign-up sheets for each meal, with community members’ names on them. The Commonhouse Mealboard is upstairs near the bathrooms.
A. THE “STANDARD”
The standard format is to create a weekly Sunday meal on a cook-team of 4 PEOPLE - 2 cooks and 2 clean-up people. Just check the calendar and sign up on any given date in the role you want to take (cook or clean-up). List your menu when you sign up, if you’re a cook. If you want to eat on any given Sunday, sign up by Friday on the mealboard and list any dietary restrictions / preferences. If you haven’t signed up by Friday and want to participate in the meal, call the cooks and make arrangements with them.
Meals are $5.00 for adults and $3.00 for children 11 and under.
PAYMENT WILL NEED TO BE GIVEN TO A DESIGNATED MEMBER OF THE MEAL COMMITTEE AT DINNERTIME, BEFORE SITTING DOWN.
B. FREESTYLE
Another way to create the meal is as you, the creator, envision it! Have an “ice cream social” some night, serve breakfast or smoothies or bagels and lox one morning, invite people to a Friday happy hour, BBQ down at the volleyball court, order take-out from your favorite restaurant and ask people to chip in to cover costs, have a bake sale….whatever! People who enjoy more intimate meals can also opt to offer one in their home with a limited sign-up on the Commonhouse mealboard, for anyone interested. This “freestyle” option is very flexible monetarily too; if cost is an issue, just ask people to contribute as they would to the meal structure outlined above (but you can set the price with this option). Just indicate your intention on the Commonhouse Mealboard, post the date, the format, and the “menu”.
C. CAG COMMUNITY MEALS
CAGs will be asked to sponsor 2 meal gatherings per year, as a team. You can link into the Sunday Meal slot, or create your own version of a gathering at another time. Think of it as a potential recruiting tool! For individuals, this fulfills one of the 4 meals per year that you’re asked to create. Just sign-up on the Commonhouse Mealboard and post the “menu”.
*A NOTE ABOUT POTLUCKS: Organizing and cleaning-up after a potluck, on a team of 2, can be substituted for 1 of the 4 meals each community member is asked to create in a year, at your own discretion.
